For years the Upper Class of Virgin Atlantic's Boeing 787-9 has been considered by many frequent flyers World's worst business class among premium airlines: an old-fashioned, angled 1-1-1 layout with no direct aisle access for all, outdated seats, and little personal space.
In this article:

A real paradox for a brand born to be "born to be different", but that on these Dreamliners seemed to be stuck in the 2000s.
Now, however, Virgin Atlantic has decided to shift gears. And it does so in a big way, announcing A massive investment to completely renovate the cabin of its 787s, bringing it to the same level as the acclaimed design already seen on the A330neo. The goal? To transform an obsolete product into the new benchmark for the long haul.
A revolution aboard the 787
Starting in 2028, all of Virgin's Boeing 787-9 fleet will undergo a total refitting. Major new features include:
-
Introduction of the Retreat Suites, the company's most spacious suites, with 8 seats per plane
-
New Upper Class by 44 seats, as opposed to the current 31
-
Premium cabin increased to 56 seats
-
Reduction in Economy seats from 192 to 127, benefiting space for high-end passengers

The new configuration promises greater comfort, privacy and modernity, with details inspired by the award-winning A330neo: fully horizontal beds, 27-inch screens, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity and social spaces ideal for those traveling in pairs or teams.
More premium, more connected, more digital
The fleet renewal is part of a $17 billion investment plan that will result by 2028 in Virgin Atlantic having a average fleet of just 7 years, with 45 latest-generation aircraft including A330-900neo, A350-1000 and 787-9.
But we're not just talking about seats: the premium experience also extends to on the ground and in the air:
-
Free and unlimited Wi-Fi Onboard through partnership with Starlink (in rollout by 2027)
-
New mobile app available from December 2025, with integrated AI concierge via OpenAI
-
Restructuring of the Heathrow Clubhouse e JFK, after the opening Of the new lounge in Los Angeles
-
Launch of the new Signature Ten Between food & drink, including "Mile High Tea" and "Cherry Pie in the Sky"
-

Flying Club: new focus on loyalty
For frequent flyers, the news doesn't stop at the cabin: the Flying Club becomes even more flexible and inclusive.
After the introduction of unlimited availability of award tickets and points that do not expire, Virgin now announces specific recognition for members with multi-year loyalty, even if they do not fly enough to earn tier status. A move designed to pamper even those who travel less but remain attached to the brand.
From worst product to total revitalization
Virgin Atlantic's message is clear: we listened to the passengers and we are changing everything. And while it is true that until now the 787 has been the company's Achilles heel, the announced renovation plan promises to completely transform the onboard experience.
From worst business class in the world he potential new queen of long haul: the future of Virgin Dreamliners has just taken off.
