SEA Milan Airports has announced the suspension of facial recognition service FaceBoarding At the Milan Linate airport.
The decision comes after a decision by the Data Protection Authority, which imposed an interim restriction on the processing of biometric data pending the closure of the investigation.
In this article:
The service, launched by SEA allowed registered passengers access to security screening and boarding simply through facial recognition, without showing ID. A voluntary, adult-only solution designed to make the travel experience faster, safer and smoother.
"Since 2019, the project had been shared with the Guarantor, with constant updates on system developments. Despite this, the Authority decided to temporarily halt the service, also based on an opinion of the European Data Protection Board regarding a case deemed similar." SEA specified in a note.
SEA, which says it is convinced that it has complied with privacy regulations, confirmed full cooperation with the Authority to clarify all aspects of the processing of biometric data. The goal remains twofold: to protect passengers and to bring back the FaceBoarding operational as soon as possible.
