Cathay Pacific has announced a major evolution of its loyalty program, which will officially go into effect from January 1, 2027, with a transition year in 2026.
A profound change, which aims to make the member experience "smoother, simpler and better" - the three key words chosen by the carrier to summarize the philosophy of the new system.
In this article:
Those familiar with the current program know that while the Cathay system was among the most generous in the oneworld landscape, it had several unintuitive elements: individual renewal cycles, point resets upon promotion, and status paths that were not always linear. From 2027, everything changes: the path to status will be more transparent, progressive and continuous, with no more artificial interruptions.
The update also introduces new rules for progression, A uniform calendar for all members, The possibility of keeping part of the excess points, and a new elite level: Diamond Exec, designed for the most loyal and frequent travelers. Added to all this is a unique recognition: the possibility of "Freeze" a free year of Diamond status. to use when needed most, rewarding long-term loyalty.

The year 2026 will be a period of adjustment: each member will retain their status until the December 31, 2026, while the level valid for 2027 will be determined based on the Status Points earned between January 1 and December 31, 2026.
A single, linear cycle
From 2027, all members will have the same validity cycle:
- earning period: January 1 to December 31;
- validity of status: Until January 31 of the following year;
- possible downgrade: Feb. 1.
This eliminates the old "rolling" system, which had different renewal dates for each member, making it easier to plan family or colleague flights.
No more resets after upgrade
In the new program, Status Points do not reset when you get a level upgrade: You will continue to add up points until the end of the year, making it possible to get multiple advances in the same period. The reset will take place only at the end of the year, the December 31, unless rollover.
Rollover of points for high levels
As of 2027, who is Gold or higher may transfer part of their excess Status Points to the following year, up to a maximum of the 50% of the required threshold For the level achieved:
- Gold → up to 300 SP
- Diamond → up to 600 SP
- Diamond Exec → up to 1,200 SP
A real advantage for those who exceed the minimum thresholds and want to start with momentum in the new year.
The new status levels
The official thresholds remain similar to the current ones, but the structure changes in clarity and logic:
|

The new "Diamond Exec" level

This is the big news of the program, which can be reached with 2,400 Status Points in one year, offers:
- Dedicated relationship manager, for personalized assistance;
- 4 Upgrade Passes up to First, which can also be used for travel companions;
- Gold companion membership To be assigned to a family member or friend;
- buggy service Free at the gate in Hong Kong (subject to availability).
Cathay thus aims to create a level Exclusive but not "invisible." concretely recognizing the customers who travel the most and represent the core of its ecosystem. Something similar to what happens with Air France's Ultimate, Lufthansa's HON Circle, or Delta 360.
Goodbye to mid-status benefits (and new benefits)
As of January 1, 2027, the mid-status benefits for Gold and Diamond will be removed.
In their place:
- who reaches Diamond (1,200 SP) will receive 2 Upgrade Passes;
- who renews Diamond Will receive 2 more in February the following year.
For members Silver, remains a milestone at 450 SP with 2 Business Lounge Passes, usable for themselves or accompanying persons.
Details for members Green will be announced during 2026, but will include "lifestyle" benefits related to the Cathay universe.
Guaranteed reservations more flexible
The "Guaranteed seat reservation" benefit changes its name to. "Exclusive reservation access":
- I Diamond will retain priority access to Premium Economy (W) and Economy (Y), but no longer to Business (J).
- I Gold will retain priority access to Economy (Y) until 72 hours before departure.
"Diamond membership reserve": loyalty rewarded over time

Cathay will introduce a unique system in the industry: those who kept Diamond status or higher for at least 5 cumulative years (including non-consecutive) will be able to redeem One free year of Diamond status for every 6,000 Status Points accumulated in a lifetime (2016 onwards).
There is no expiration or limit to the number of "bonus" years you can earn-you can activate them whenever you want, even at a time when you fly less. It's a way to recognize true loyalty, not just recent attendance, allowing you to secure the level for those who, for whatever reason, find their feet on the ground for 12 months.
How Status Points are Earned
The basic mechanism does not change: Status Points are earned primarily by flying with Cathay Pacific or with oneworld companies, based on distance and class of travel. Instead, Asia Miles will continue to be used for rewards (tickets, upgrades, experiences).
The system is the same as that used by Flying Blue with XP or Lufthansa with Points.
Cathay Pacific Flights

Each Cathay flight (CX) credits Status Points according to the booking class and the length of the route. The logic remains at "mileage bands" and does not take the "revenue based" drift invented by IAG carriers (British and Iberia).

(Example: a Hong Kong-Milan in Business is worth 100/130 Status Points each way depending on the class).
oneworld partners

Flights operated by oneworld partners (such as Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, etc.) generate SPs when they are traded or operated by a oneworld company and the tariff is qualifying. Each carrier has a dedicated table, but the principle remains the same: the higher the class and the longer the route, the more SPs are gained. Thus, there is no difference between the CX flown and the flown by other partners.
Lifestyle activities and partners
In 2026 Cathay will expand the link between travel and daily life: some activities - such as Cathay Holidays, Cathay Shop, co-branded credit cards and selected partners - will begin to generate Qualifying Status Points, in line with the new "travel + lifestyle" philosophy.
How many flights does it take to achieve status?

Indicative:
- Silver (300 SP) → 5 regional flights in business or 10 in economy
- Gold (600 SP) → 10 medium-short flights in business or 20 in premium economy
- Diamond (1,200 SP) → 12 long-haul routes in Business
- Diamond Exec (2,400 SP) → 20 long-haul flights in Business or 10 in First
In conclusion
Cathay does not change its program philosophy-it remains centered on flights and experience-but modernizes the rules to make them more consistent with today's travel world, where consistency matters more than quantity. An evolution that marks a turning point in the oneworld landscape: more than just an update, a new way of understanding fidelity.
I've never hidden that I appreciate this metric so much for climbing the status ladder, just Open the calculator and know how many flights you have scheduled to get to the bottom of where you will end up. To be nitpicky the only real flaw for us Italians is the requirement to fly at least 2 CX routes to scale up, but it is not clear to me from reading the FAQ whether two routes per year or two routes per level are enough.
