Thousands of A321neo and A320neo in the skies but... why the A319neo is (almost) a ghost

The Airbus A319 is an airplane that has enjoyed great success in markets around the world. Let's talk about the 'ceo' version.
In this article:
In Europe alone, the plane is currently in service with TAP, Iberia, ITA Airways, Swiss, Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, SAS, Finnair, and Turkish Airlines. And in North America with all three U.S. majors-American, Delta, and United.
In all, 1,720 A319ceo were produced and delivered. Admittedly, the number of deliveries of the A320ceo (4,752) is far off. But that of its larger sibling, the A321ceo, which sold 1,784 units, is not too.

Production of the 'ceo' models of the A320 family ended in 2021, when Airbus began building and marketing the 'neo'. And since that time the baby-Airbus has been lost track of.

While in fact the A320 neo and A321neo have invaded skies and airports with 1,842 and 1,752 airplanes delivered by Airbus to customers, respectively, according to an official Airbus figure of June 2025, Raise your hand if you have seen an A319neo around. Or, even, who is aware that Airbus, alongside the A320neo and A321neo, is also building the A319neo. If you raised it, your hand, you are white flies (very well informed, by the way). Why the neo version of the baby-Airbus so far has received only 57 orders, and there are only 39 examples in service in all.

Basically, exemplary BBJ (i.e., in VIP configuration) on the side, you may have had some chance of catching sight of the plane just in case you are a frequent visitor to Chinese airports. In fact, the only three airlines that are operating the A319neo are Tibet Airlines Who has fourteen in service, China Southern Airlines which has nine in service and Air China Which has five in service.

Of Airbus' three neo variants of narrow-body aircraft, the A319neo has the longest flight range: 6,500km versus 6,300km for the A320neo and A321neo. And the maximum capacity is 160 passengers in single cabin configuration, or 140 in two classes. Tibet Airlines is flying there with 8 seats in Business and 126 in Economy, China Southern with 4 seats in Business and 132 in Economy and Air China with 8 seats in Business and 120 in Economy.
Translated: there is nothing wrong with the A319neo, per se. But the fact is that, when it was put on the market, it faced 'friendly fire,' that is, competition from another aircraft produced by the same Airbus: the A220 in its two versions -100 and -300. An airplane that met with tremendous success among passengers because of its large portholes, widest seats in its class, and interior with rows of five seats arranged 2-3. As a testament to its success, by October 2025 more than 450 examples had been delivered to companies out of a total of about 650 ordered.
The A220, however, in recent months is proving to be a double-edged sword for many airlines (including our ITA Airways) because of the fragility of the Pratt & Whitney 1500G engines it mounts, which require frequent maintenance when not replacement, with the result that a substantial portion of those 450 aircraft are now parked on the ground (and some companies, such as Air Austral and Egyptair have even decided to get rid of the aircraft).
Should these engine-related problems persist, who knows if the A319neo will find new market share (Also taking advantage of the fact that his other competitor, the Boeing 737 MAX 7, has not yet been certified by the FAA)?
