Transferring Avios is no longer immediate: the new 30-day rule

Nasty surprise (or rather: new rule to know) for Avios users. An important change has emerged in recent days: to transfer points between Avios programs, your account must have been active for at least 30 days.
In this article:
A silent change, but one with a very real impact for those who take advantage of last minute strategies or open "on the fly" accounts to book an award flight.
The new rule: 30 days of seniority to transfer Avios
The news comes directly from the official terms and conditions: an account must be at least 30 days old in order to receive Avios transfers. This means that if you have just created an account (e.g., Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club, or Finnair Plus), you cannot immediately transfer points from other programs.
According to several reports and practice tests, this limitation is already active and is creating problems for those who try to move points within the first month.

Basically you can create an account today, you can also accumulate points, but you can't use it right away to receive Avios from other programs. And for those accustomed to moving points in real time, it is a change that is anything but trivial.
Why was this rule introduced
In recent months the Avios world has been anything but stable: between temporary transfer blocks e problems related to fraud, the various programs are clearly tightening controls.
This 30-day rule should be read precisely in this direction: Reduce abuse and suspicious movements between newly created accounts.
This is not even the first such restriction:
- In the past, Iberia required accounts that had been active for 90 days to transfer points
- were required even minimal activities or perfectly aligned data between accounts
The difference is that now the limitation is more "horizontal" and affects the entire Avios ecosystem, not just individual programs.
What really changes (and how to avoid problems)
One of the great strengths of Avios has always been the "Combine My Avios", which allows Move points for free and in real time between different programs. It is this flexibility that made Avios so attractive because you could find availability on a program, move points around in seconds, and complete the reservation without too many steps.
Now the logic remains the same, but with one more condition: If the account you want to use was created less than 30 days ago, the transfer will not start. And it is precisely this detail that complicates life a bit when it comes to last-minute bookings.

The typical situation is always the same: you find a perfect award flight on Qatar Airways, but the points are on British Airways. Until recently, all you had to do was open an account, link it, and move everything in a matter of minutes; today, however, that step only works if that account has existed for a while, otherwise you're not going anywhere.
To avoid this, the only sensible move is to play ahead and Open all accounts even when not needed. British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, Aer Lingus AerClub... Might as well create them once and leave them there.

You don't need to use them right away, and you also don't need to have points: it is enough that they exist and have passed those 30 days. It's one of those things that you always put off because it doesn't seem urgent, until you're faced with an interesting premium availability and you realize it's too late to fix it.
The best availabilities, after all, do not wait. Arriving prepared makes a lot more difference than it seems, and in this case, it takes very little to avoid a big dose of frustration. Avios remain an extremely powerful tool, but they require a little more organized approach than before. Nothing complicated, it simply pays to think about it beforehand instead of while you are trying to book.
