On several occasions we have talked about the possibility of buying points/miles of airlines or hotels. Nine times out of ten it's a practice that doesn't make a lot of sense, but sometimes it pays off. Today is one of those cases.
In this article:
This strategy is tried and tested, but one must be careful of the risks. Buyers must be aware that they must buy to use, not to put aside. Otherwise the risk is that, in the event of devaluation, one will be left holding the bag.
Emirates promotion
The companies use this practice to make cash, the traveler, on the other hand, to "close" the gap between the points possessed and those missing from the quota needed to detach an award ticket.
Offer lasts only until midnight today and allows you to have a bonus of 100%, meaning for every amount of Skywards points bought over .5000, you will receive the same amount of free points.
There are some basics to keep in mind when it comes to purchasing Skywards miles:
- You can purchase up to 100,000 miles per Skywards account per calendar year
- You can only buy miles if you have done at least one activity in your Skywards account
- It can take up to 48 hours for purchased miles to be credited to your account
- Mileage purchases are processed by points.com, so they do not count as airfare for credit card spending purposes
Is it worth buying Skywards points?
As said it is a matter of math, you buy if you lack a handful of points or if using the purchased points you can detach a ticket at a lower price than the published fare. Let's take an example:
Peel off an award ticket to fly from Milan to New York coast:
- Business class: 62,500 miles one way, 90,000 miles round trip
- First class: 85,000 miles one way, 135,000 miles round trip
The average price for a business ticket on the same route is 2,000€, or 4,000€ for first class.
On balance with the current promotion it is possible to buy the 90k Emirates points by spending just over €1150, thus saving almost €1000 on the ticket.
The savings for those who wanted to try Emirates First Class would be even greater, as buying 68k points would spend €1,746, but one could immediately detach a ticket worth more than €4,000.
Of course, this is only the most interesting example for us Italians, but you can save a great deal on all routes served by the company.
In conclusion
This offer is historic for Emirates, I don't remember the same or similar one. If you are planning to travel this summer to an open and reachable destination with this airline, hurry, the promo expires at midnight today (May 7).
