Great news for the Italian market, with Royal Caribbean Group which continues to set its sights on our country. Eyes are on Ravenna, and specifically on Porto Corsini. It is here, on the northern coast of the Adriatic, that a new cruise terminal will be built.
In this article:
A project that should be completed by spring 2024, according to the announced schedule. Considerable employment is expected for this maritime station, with more than 300 thousand passengers annually. It all began with the awarding of the European tender for the concession for the maritime station service in favor of Rcl Cruises. This company is part of the Royal Caribbean and also obtained permission for the construction of a new terminal.
Royal Caribbean, what we know about the terminal
Here is an official note published by the North Central Adriatic Sea Port System Authority: "This award closes a path that began in the summer of 2020. At the time, Rcl Cruises itself had submitted a proposal for a public-private partnership for the construction of the new cruise terminal and related concession."
It is also pointed out that there is a plan to include these facilities in the context of the New Dune Park, which the Authority itself will provide. In the near future, the significance of the port of Ravenna, which is destined to become a cruise start and end point, overcoming the current status of a transit stage.
A veritable economic spin-off, considering the possible direct and indirect revenues that lie ahead. These range, of course, from the jobs created, to the revenue opportunities for the area related to the pre- and post-cruise stays. This is an important signal for the entire area, ready to serve as a link with the following airports:
- Bologna
- Forli
- Rimini
- Venice
In this regard, he expressed his views on Joshua Carroll, vice president destinaton development from the company. Here are his words, "We are excited about what is an extraordinary opportunity for us. It will enable us to implement a project that will be cutting edge. The reference goes to the services guaranteed, as well as the issue of sustainability and harmonization with the surrounding environment. We will have the opportunity to apply our skills and accumulated experience in an area like Romagna, which has always had a vocation for hospitality."
Homeport in Ravenna, the project
As mentioned, the construction of the terminal will fit into the context of the Dune Park, which will be built by Adsp. The project involves the occupation of 12 acres overall, aiming to better amalgamate industrial and natural and scenic spaces. Not just an industrial work and growth area, then, but a huge space intended to be fully utilized by the population. There will be bicycle and pedestrian paths, numerous state-of-the-art facilities and services.
It will not be a cathedral in the desert, as well as an entirely alien creation in the context in which it will be placed. It can be said that this will be a pivotal element: continuity with the elements of naturalness in the coastal area.
There is also a system of dock electrification. This will make it possible to allow idling ships to turn off their engines and power themselves through electricity. A crucial element regarding the environmental sustainability inherent in homeport management. It is for this reason that the Adsp has obtained funds from the Pnrr for 30 million euros. The total investment will be 28 million euros, of which just 6 will be borne by the port authority. The guaranteed concession period of 33 years is also known.
