December's was to be the last automatic renewal of statuses for members of the Executive Club, British Airways' loyalty program, instead came a new announcement for all members with the level expiring between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2022.
Dates to remember
In this article:
All British Airways frequent flyer members know that they need to remember 2 dates:
- The deadline for collecting points, which is the period in which to accumulate Executive Club points on flights to move between Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Club. At the end of the collection year, Executive Club points are reset to zero. You will begin the next collection year at the level you just reached and enjoy a full year of that level unless, of course, you reach the next level in the meantime.
- The expiration date of the paper, which is the status expiration date. The validity has always been one month beyond the expiration date of the point collection, this is because BA used to calculate any delays in sending the physical card, which is now superseded by the digital version.
What changes for those with expiring status
This time BA decided on a different approach depending on the level possessed:
- Who has the Silver level expiring by June may renew the level with only 300 qualifying points if the membership year ends between July and September. This is the level that gives lounge access.
- Gold members, whose Tier Collection year ends between July and September 2022 will see their status extended by another 12 months.
- Gold Guest List members, whose enrollment year ends by December 31, 2022, will see their status extended for another 12 months.
From January back to pre-pandemic levels
In January 2023, the facilities for obtaining/renewing status, which as of today is discounted by 25% from what is normally expected, will end, barring new pandemic developments.
All members will then be able to take advantage of the facilitated levels according to this table:
- Bronze: 225 Tier Points or 18 qualifying flights
- Silver: 450 Tier Points or 37 qualifying flights
- Gold: 1125 level points
As of January 1, 2023 these thresholds will return to previous levels:
- Bronze: 300 Tier Points or 25 qualifying flights
- Silver: 600 Tier Points or 50 qualifying flights
- Gold: 1500 level points
In conclusion
Other companies have also taken similar initiatives for 2022. Of course, the time of automatic renewals without requirements is over, just treat differently based on membership level. Lucky those who get their Gold Guest List renewed for the third year in a row.
