He is expected to Genoa For Sunday the new ITA Airways' Airbus A220, the smallest of the planes produced by the European giant (although this model was born and is assembled in Canada) that Is revolutionizing the world of air transport in short to medium haul. His debut, however, is jeopardized in these hours by the Ansaldo Energia workers strike, a company in Genoa: hundreds of workers have in fact busy Cristoforo Colombo airport in Genoa, breaking through the police blockade in front of the terminal entrance and occupying the boarding area.
In this article:
Genoa airport reported that flights are grounded: departures suspended, arrivals will be diverted to other airports. The act of occupying the airport was condemned by Liguria Regional President Giovanni Toti and Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci. The protesters risk dozens of charges for disrupting a public service. Despite this, The protest, at the moment, goes on "to the bitter end": Workers from all other metal companies in the city are also expected to join tomorrow.
If the situation does not unblock, in short, the risk is that on Sunday the A220 may not take off from Rome Fiumicino bound for Genoa.
Update 6 p.m. - After a communication from ownership, which promised workers the required recapitalization, the strike was called off. The airport then returned to operations.
According to schedule, flight AZ1383 is scheduled to take off from Rome on Sunday at 9 a.m., then depart from the Ligurian airport as Az1384.
Arriving in Rome, it won't be long since it will be immediately busy on its first international route and, surely not coincidentally, the first destination will be Geneva, an airport that is home to many of Swiss's A220s.
In the following days, it will be possible to spot the plane in various rotations over Naples, Linate, and other Italian and non-Italian airports. Once the others arrive, it is conceivable that the A220 will be used on Linate/London City, Linate/Brussels, and other routes where ITA today flies smaller aircraft. It also seems almost certain that at least one rotation per day will be fixed on Rome/Genoa.
ITA Airways' A220
The Airbus A200 landed at Rome Fiumicino on Oct. 10 sporting a white "Born To Be Sustainable" livery, the same as its big brother the A350 that entered service this summer, a confirmation of ITA Airways' commitment to sustainability.
This is one of four A220s that will go into operation starting in October and will help lead ITA Airways to become Europe's greenest carrier with the 80% of next-generation aircraft in the fleet by 2026.
Airbus A220 is the most efficient single-aisle aircraft small in its category and will enable the company to benefit from a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2Â per passenger than the previous generation. It is lighter, quieter, with benchmark levels of on-board comfort.
It will be operational between Rome, Milan, Genoa, Turin, Naples, Geneva, Zurich and Munich. In addition to the new A220s that flank A350 flagship in ITA Airways fleet., additional A220s and A330-900neo, A320neo and A321neo will arrive in the coming months.
Here at TFC, we have never hidden that we are in love with the A220., an aircraft that has nothing to do with A320 or B737. More comfortable, with bigger windows, quieter, better air quality. Also, because of the 2-3 configuration, it is much more relaxing. Let's just hope ITA equipped it at least with wi-fi as Air France did: the first images seem to confirm this.
