Before the pandemic, there were two direct flights a day from Italy to Tokyo, both operated by Alitalia, which flew from Rome and Milan Malpensa to Tokyo Narita.
In this article:
In April 2020, the Haneda Malpensa connection operated by All Nippon Airlines was to take off for the first time, Japan's largest company had decided to return to Italy after more than 20 years of absence and break the monopoly of connections held by Italy's national airline. This flight was part of the landing rights that would, again in April 2020, allow Alitalia to start flying on Haneda, the most convenient airport being almost a city airport compared to Narita which is over 60km away instead.
Of course, the covid cancelled all plans, and the reopening of the borders of the Japan which occurred only last October, had done the rest.
ANA had implied, however, that the flight would resume with the summer season. The Japanese airline's Dreamliner, outfitted Without the award-winning first class, was to fly three times a week from April to October.
This decision therefore leaves ITA Airways the only carrier connecting Italy with Japan, for our national airline is very good news, since the connection to Tokyo has always been, along with flights to South America, one of the richest and most profitable.
It is not good news, however, for Italians who lose the chance to fly directly from Milan to Rome with one of the best airlines in the world.
The Rome flight was not the only one to be delayed: no direct flights from Japan even to Istanbul, Stockholm and Moscow.
